Call Your Member of Congress Today, Tell Them to Pass the Matthew Shepard Act!


 

 

We've received word that the House will vote on the Matthew Shepard Act very soon and we know that right-wing groups are flooding Congress with calls, emails and sickening ‘fact sheets’ full of lies about the lives of LGBT Americans. We need more calls to Members of Congress, and we need them right away. It has been ten long years and tens of thousands more victims since the Matthew Shepard Act was first introduced in Congress. We are poised for a presidential signature this year but lies from the radical right could easily derail our efforts. We must not allow them to continue to demagogue and distort the truth.

We ask you to call Congress in support of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, a bill which would provide local police and sheriff’s departments with
federal resources to combat hate violence. After more than a decade of lobbying on Capitol Hill and
seven successful votes on the bill, this critical piece of legislation is again expected to see a vote in the House this week. The call-in campaign is set for April 27-29.

Back from Washington!

Members of Greater Cincinnati Steering Committee

Members of HRC Greater Cincinnati's Steering Committe travelled to Washington D.C. to participate in HRC"s lobby day and attend the 2009 Equality Convention. In addition to seeing old friends and making new ones from across the Unted States, we all participated in the closing ceremony.

The Greater Cincinnati team was awarded Steering Committee of the Year for communities with 0 - 3 Board of Governor representatives!!!

The Diversity, Political, Federal Club and Volunteer sub-committees were honored for their own individual achievements during this past year. Awards included:

  • Innovative Partnership & Outreach Award (Diversity)
  • Federal Club Committee of the Year (0-3 Governors)
  • Volunteer Engagement Award (Chad Nielson and Andrew Winters)
  • Exceptional Work on a Candidate Campaign

On lobby day, the contigent from Cincinnati met with legislators or their staff including Congressman Steve Driehaus (D - OH1) himself, Senator Sherrod Brown himself and staff, as well as aides from Senators Voinovich and Congresswoman Jean Schmidt's (R - OH2) office. In addition, visits were made to Kentucky legislators Congressman Geoff Davis' and Senators Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnel's offices.
